Valentina Chistova, International Skin Care Expert

Skin care products, they’re everywhere! On the TV, Internet, and department store beauty counters. They promise beautiful skin for their devoted followers. But how do you really know if these products are working for you? How do you know which products are worthy and which are a waste?

There is so much confusion about which skin care products consumers actually need, because the average consumer does not know his or her skin type. They might think they have oily skin, because they become shiny at the end of the day, or maybe they think they have dry skin because their skin feels tight. All of these physical attributes could actually be symptoms of incorrect skin care and not actual determining factors to one’s specific skin type.

The real question is what does your skin need?

To understand your skin’s unique composition, schedule a consultation with a professionally trained skin care expert. A proper analysis of your skin’s natural balance of oil and water can help you determine which skin care products you need for your type.

Years of improper skin care can have devastating effects. The number one misuse of skin care products occurs from women who have oily skin. Oil is your skin’s natural method of hydration. However, because women don’t like a shiny appearance, they often use harsh products to strip the skin of its natural oils. What women are really doing is disrupting the proper balance of oil and water in their skin. Later on down the road, these same women suffer the symptoms of dry skin. Their skin has lots its natural moisture, and there is no cream that can replace your skin’s natural moisture. Symptoms can include a tightening feeling in the skin, deep and defined wrinkles and fine lines, flaking of the skin, grayish/dull discoloration of the skin.

Do you want a fast fix or a long-term solution to caring for your skin?

My goal is to help you perfect your skin care regimen while you still can. You can create a future radiance and glow for your skin by choosing the right products that work with your specific skin type. Did you ever see an older women whose skin looks so soft? Her wrinkles even look soft and faint, and she will have a rosy glow to her cheeks. This is a woman who has kept her skin’s natural balance of oil and water intact.

My grandmother used to always say to me, “Val if you don’t take care of your skin every night, your skin will grow 4 days older each time you neglect it.”

Valentina’s Solution

Go to a professional and get to know your skin type and what you need to maintain and protect your natural balance of oil and water. When you purchase your skin care products from the Internet, TV or department store counter, you are taking a gamble that the product will actually work against your desired results. Don’t take the advice of someone who is not a trained and licensed skin care expert. If you are interested in a product that you saw on the TV or in a store, seek the advice of a professional first, see if it’s right for your type. Then make your product purchases. A true professional will not persuade you to buy other products. If you are simply looking for advice, they should be open and honest with you.

Acne on The Chin, Why Teens Experience this Problem. NJ Skin Care Expert Talks

Question: Hi Valentina - why does my teenage son only get bad acne around his chin and lower cheeks? The rest of his face seems fine.

Valentina: This is very common for teens. Acne around the chin is usually from overactive hormones, something all teens most likely will experience. The overactive hormones produce extra sebum (oil) around the chin and lower jaw line which tends to cause higher levels of acne there.

Your teen should be on a good skin care regimen. He should wash his face twice a day and follow that up with a toner and acne treatment for affected areas. If areas of his face are dry he should use a gentle moisturizer for those areas. Use an acne fighting exfoliator at least once a week as well.

It is a good idea to begin him on a monthly teen facial routine. The facial will help extract any impurities that are trapped beneath the skin’s surface. Removing them during a facial will often prevent them from forming whiteheads later on. Our Valentina's teen facial is formulated specifically for the problems of teen skin, we use all natural, anti-oxidant products.

It is important to regularly clean cell phones as well. Cell phones are notoriously dirty and full of bacteria. We often press them up against our cheeks when we talk which can cause breakouts. Also try to keep his hands away from his face. When oils from our fingers are transposed onto our skin, breakouts are likely.

If his skin does not respond to over the counter medicine, a dermatologist can recommend a prescription to treat his acne.

Can Men Wax Their Facial Hair?

Question: My husband is looking for relief from his regular shaving routing. He shaves in the morning and it’s back again at night. Could he wax his facial hair so he doesn’t have to shave so much?

Valentina: I never recommend for men to wax their facial hair. First, the hair on men’s faces is much more coarse and thick than body hair. This makes it more difficult to remove. Second, the skin on the face is sensitive. These two combinations can make for some disastrous results if a man waxes his face.

I can sympathize with your husband not wanting to have to shave so often. My preferred method of hair removal for a man’s face is laser. Although it is costly, results are excellent.

Laser hair removal uses laser light to pass a light beam through the skin. The laser targets dark pigment, called melanin, in hair. When the light beam hits the hair follicle it is destroyed instantly from the intense heat. Patients usually report a slight stinging sensation when the laser is activated.

In most cases, laser hair removal slows hair regrowth, which could be excellent for your husband. Several treatments can nearly remove all of the hair for a very long period of time.
